The Main Factors Of ABS Sheet Aging

Jul 06, 2021

ABS plastic is a general-purpose engineering plastic, which is widely used in electrical and electronic product parts, auto parts and so on. Also after these products are scrapped, there is a large amount of discarded ABS plastics. Moreover, ABS materials will also experience aging. Then, what are the main factors of ABS aging?

ABS is affected by various factors in the natural environment. Oxygen is the main factor causing ABS aging. Light and heat accelerate the aging of ABS, and the effect of light is slightly stronger. ABS is very easy to yellow when exposed to natural atmosphere. The yellowing of ABS is mainly because the polybutadiene isolated double bond in the structure generates hydroperoxide after being subjected to oxygen, and initiates the degradation of the SAN phase, so that chromophores such as carbonyl groups are formed on the molecular chain. The energy of light is inversely proportional to its wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the greater the energy. Comparing the dissociation energy of various organic compound bonds with the ultraviolet light energy in sunlight, it can be seen that ultraviolet light can cause aging and degradation of polymer materials.

In summary, oxygen in the natural environment of ABS materials is the main factor causing ABS aging, while light and heat have an accelerating effect on ABS aging. The yellowing of ABS is also caused by changes in its internal components under the action of oxygen.
